Anthony Ellis Photography
A Unique Brief
Anthony Ellis is a seasoned traveller and serious hobbyist photographer whose work spans decades and continents. His goal was not commercial gain, lead generation, or high traffic — but to present his vast portfolio in an immersive, highly personal way.
His existing off-the-shelf solution looked attractive but suffered from slow performance, clunky backend management, and limited design flexibility. Anthony wanted more control over how albums were navigated and displayed, and a faster, more engaging viewing experience.
Reimagining Exploration
Rather than looking to existing photography platforms for inspiration, Vigo drew on interactive map and data visualisation experiences from sectors like global security and transportation. Early research established two key dimensions to organise the portfolio: time and geography.
This thinking led to a navigation model that combined:
A world map plotting the locations of photographic moments.
A timeline slider enabling exploration by year or period.
The aim was to take viewers on a journey through Anthony’s travels, allowing them to filter and discover images based on when and where they were taken.
Design and Technology Choices
Performance requirements were exacting: full-resolution images, minimal load times, and a seamless user experience. Vigo chose Webflow as the build platform, leveraging its robust CDN (powered by Fastly and AWS) for global speed, and its cost-effective, low-maintenance hosting model.
The final build was a highly bespoke implementation of the platform, with significant custom CSS and a Mapbox integration to power the interactive map features. The site structure allowed Anthony to manage and add content himself, with no ongoing dependency on external support.
Deliverables and Launch
The engagement encompasses distinct research, design and build phases with key deliverables at each stage of the project presented back to a signed off by the client.
These deliverables included high-fidelity Figma prototypes for key interactions, a custom component library tailored for a media-rich experience and the final fully developed and populated Webflow site with interactive map and timeline navigation.
The result is a successful site that reflects the photographer’s creative vision, allowing visitors to explore his work in the way he intended — fast, intuitive, and deeply engaging.
